I explained that this monthly event starts for girls at about 13 and that it's just something that is part of life. No awkwardness. Just straightforward, true answers telling them "what" it is. But there's no need to get into the "why" of the period until your child is ready for that.
All three girls hit 13 right on schedule, but we'd been talking about this from the time they were 4 years old. No biggie. We left it so matter-of-fact that to them it was just something normal, like breathing. Later, when they were older -- fifth grade -- I explained the rest of it.

They're 17, 20, and 23 now and I'm happy to report that we have always had a great and open relationship, and that -- so far -- we can talk about anything, easily.

Just my two cents.
JulieJulie Hyzyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15601637878498393081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3591262791565589251.post-25495870640873819512009-10-07T15:20:16.412-07:002009-10-07T15:20:16.412-07:00Good advice. You could still tell her about the changes her body will go thru with out getting into sex. Listen to your inner mom voice.
